Oftentimes, in order to obtain the needed expertise on a science team, team members are located in geographically distributed areas. While our current ability to form and maintain distributed teams offers the ability to pull together a range of expertise, it also introduces challenges related to communication, coordination, and culture. The Collaboration Success Wizard is an online diagnostic survey for geographically distributed collaborations. The survey probes factors that may strengthen or weaken the collaboration. The Wizard provides both personal and project-level reports to help build successful and productive collaborative projects. yet distance introduces challenges. A related paper presents two case studies of the use of the Collaboration Success Wizard in evaluating ongoing collaborative projects in the health sciences. The CSW is designed both to validate and refine existing theory about the factors that encourage successful collaboration and to promote good collaborative practices in geographically distributed team-based scientific projects. These cases demonstrate that the CSW can promote reflection and positive change in collaborative science.
