Solutions to complex scientic problems require teams of diverse specialists working across the boundaries of disciplinary silos. The COALESCE project, also known as, aims to create, evaluate, and disseminate durable, readily accessible on-line learning resources to enhance skills needed to perform transdisciplinary, team-based translational research. The project is supported by NIH ARRA supplement 3UL1RR025741-02S4 to Northwestern University's CTSA and by N01-LM-6-3512 from the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research to Bonnie Spring. COALESCE is the product of a collaboration among Spring, Arlen Moller, and Holly Falk-Krzesinski, all at Northwestern. The four learning modules address senior investigators, junior investigators, and institutional development officers. The four learning modules address senior investigators, junior investigators, and institutional development officers. Tools are designed to help learners envision how transdisciplinary collaboration can work and overcome the inevitable communication challenges that arise when working in multidisciplinary teams. Module 1 provides an introduction to major concepts and findings in the science of team science and features interview clips with leading experts. Modules 2 through 4 enable learners to work through simulated team science challenges in behavioral, clinical, and basic biomedical science, while adopting different role perspectives. The aim is to allow users to engage virtually in the challenges of team research, while having access to guidance from human experts. We encourage you to use our extensive resource library and to use our message boards to discuss issues in team science with other researchers.
