Going Viral: Impact and Implications of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

We are pleased to invite you to Going Viral: Impact and Implications of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic, an interdisciplinary symposium to mark the 100th anniversary of one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

This symposium will be hosted April 4-6, 2018, by UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC’s Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and RTI International.

Symposium events will offer perspectives from the vantage points of medicine, health,social sciences and the humanities. Speakers include leading experts in epidemiology, virology, medicine, communications, literature, history, ethics,policy and other fields. Speaker affiliations include University of Michigan,Duke University, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo, North Carolina State University, Sabin Vaccine Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Georgia Southern University, Resolve to Save Lives, the Centers for Disease Control, the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, University of North Carolina-Charlotte and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The symposium features New York Times journalist, and two-time Pulitzer Price finalist,Gina Kolata, as keynote speaker. Kolata is a best-selling author who wrote Flu:The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus that Caused It.
