About Us
Supporting the Development of the SciTS Field
Objective: The SciTS team aims to support the development and evolution
of the SciTS field by supporting platforms for knowledge sharing and information
exchange, including conferences, journal special issues devoted to team science,
and web-based technologies for knowledge sharing and information exchange on team
science. Related activities are described below.
2006 National Conference on Science of Team Science: Understanding the Value of
Transdisciplinary Research
In 2006, the SciTS team, in collaboration with the NIH Office of Behavioral and
Social Science Research (OBSSR) and the American Psychological Association (APA),
hosted the National Conference on the Science of Team Science: Understanding the
Value of Transdisciplinary Research in Bethesda, Maryland. The purpose of
this two day conference was to bring together experts in team science (particularly
transdisciplinary team science) to present an overview of the current state of research
about team science and identify priority areas and future directions for the field.
Please visit the
conference archive for more information.
American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) Supplement on the "Science of Team
Science"
A subset of the conference papers from the National Conference on the Science of
Team Science: Understanding the Value of Transdisciplinary Research were
later synthesized in a
special issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine published in August
2008 (Volume 35, issue 2). This supplement, entitled The Science of Team Science:
Assessing the Value of Transdisciplinary Research, provided an overview
of key research and conceptual developments in the emerging SciTS field.
The Annual Science of Team Science Conference
The NCI SciTS team co-sponsors the annual Science of Team Science (SciTS) Conference. In 2010, 2011, and 2012, the conference was hosted by Research Team Support & Development (RTS&D) at the
Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute
. In 2013, the conference was hosted by the NUCATS Institute, the Northwestern Institute for Complexity (NICO) at Northwestern University
, and the Science of Networks in Communities (SONIC) Research Group at Northwestern University
.
The purpose of the annual SciTS conference is to bring together researchers, practitioners and funders of team science to learn about new developments in the SciTS field and better understand how to translate this knowledge into effective team science collaborations.
NCI SciTS team members served on the inaugural conference planning committee and played a substantive role in helping to develop and multilevel concept map of the field and comprehensive SciTS research agenda. Key publications that resulted from these efforts can be accessed include:

NCI SciTS team members continue to play substantive roles in program planning for the SciTS conference. Dr. Kara Hall was program chair for the 2013 conference.
