Introducing the Team Science Toolkit

The Team Science Toolkit (https://www.teamsciencetoolkit.cancer.gov/public/home.aspx?nav=email) is an interactive website that provides resources to help you manage, support, conduct, or study team-based research. The Toolkit consolidates resources from multiple disciplines and fields in one accessible location. The website includes user-generated resources, such as practical tools and strategies for effective team science, and measures and metrics to study team science. It also includes content written or coordinated by the NCI, such as introductions to team science and the Science of Team Science (SciTS) field and expert blog posts.

How the Toolkit Can Help You:

Leaders and members of science teams can maximize the effectiveness of their team-based research by applying practical strategies and tools available in the Toolkit. For example –

Team Science Evaluators and Researchers can share instruments, measures and methods and connect with colleagues to enable future collaborations. For example –

Administrators at academic institutions, businesses, and other organizations can find tools to create an environment supportive of team science and SciTS research. For example –

Funding agency officials can access model funding announcements, collaboration guidelines, and other resources to support team science among grantees. For example –

Resources to enhance your team-based research -- The “Team Science Toolkit” website

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has developed the Team Science Toolkit (https://www.teamsciencetoolkit.cancer.gov/public/home.aspx?nav=email), an interactive website that provides knowledge and practical tools to enhance team-based research. Resources in the Toolkit can help you engage in, manage, support, or evaluate team-based research.

There is a growing body of knowledge about how to enhance team collaboration in science to maximize productivity and innovation. But this knowledge may be hard to access, as it is generated by multiple fields, including communications, management sciences, psychology, and information technology. In addition, many researchers do not have the time to search the academic literature.

The Team Science Toolkit (https://www.teamsciencetoolkit.cancer.gov/public/home.aspx?nav=email) puts this knowledge at your fingertips. It consolidates information and practical tools in one accessible online location. Resources in the Toolkit include: practical tools and strategies for effective team science, measures and metrics to study team science, and scholarly articles. It also includes expert blog posts and an introduction to team science. Toolkit resources are user-generated, reflecting the knowledge of the broad range of stakeholders involved in team science.

The Toolkit can be used in three ways:

  1. Discover. Learn from colleagues by exploring available resources to support your team science goals, and download resources or link to them online.
  2. Contribute. Share your knowledge by uploading documents, links, information, or comments on resources in the Toolkit database.
  3. Connect. Join our listserv, add your name to the expert directory, or views news and events announcements.

Some popular resources in the Toolkit include –

If you have used the Team Science Toolkit, NCI wants to hear about your experiences! NCI is also interested in hearing your comments or questions about the Toolkit, or suggestions about how to enhance the content or user interface. Please email Amanda Vogel at – vogelal@mail.nih.gov
